Seating and mobility are now widely recognised by people with disabilities, parents, carers and health professionals as major factors in improving function and enhancing independence. The Seating and Mobility Department of the Central Remedial Clinic was established in 1986 as the first specialist clinic in Ireland. The CRC Seating and Mobility department has played a leading role in developing this area and provides services throughout Ireland as well as to clients of the CRC in Dublin.
The service is available to children and adults who require support in sitting and when moving. A team which includes occupational therapists, rehabilitation engineers, clinical engineers, CE technicians and physiotherapists, assess the persons's positioning and mobility problems with the aim of providing a suitable solution to those needs.
Providing the child with a supportive seating system enables them to explore and use their hands for play and daily activities. The seating system should be adaptable to provide the child with a stable postural base while allowing the child to develop his or her own potential to sit. Providing them with a seating system which moves under their own control allows them to achieve further independence.
The Seating and Mobility Department are pleased to announce the first European Seating Symposium, to be held in Clontarf Castle from the 2nd to the 4th of May. For more information please visiting the conference website at www.seating.ie.
