CRC Firhouse Local Centre provides a day service to adults with a physical and intellectual disabilities and who are living in the south west Dublin catchment area.  Aiming to minimise the social effects of disability, the Firhouse staff team work with the adults attending the centre to design and deliver a meaningful programme of activity, personal development and social inclusion, while ensuring that the centre also provides a space where the adults who attend can feel safe and supported. The activities include art, crafts, music, creative writing, gardening and social and cultural events. There are also sessions provided by the local Education and Training Board, and the adults who attend are active on several committees, advocating for their friends and colleagues and promoting the rights of persons with disabilities.

The centre caters only for those over 18 whose disability is primarily physical,  live in the CHO7 area and the service is accessed through referrals via the HSE.  While independence is always encouraged and supported, transport to the centre is available for those who might otherwise be unable to attend. The staff team is highly experienced and qualified, and just prior to the Covid pandemic the centre won the coveted title Day Centre of the Year at the Irish Healthcare Provider Awards.  Throughout the pandemic, Firhouse Local Centre continued to provide a service to everyone who used the centre, initially offering support remotely, and as restrictions eased, back in the centre.  As the service returns to a new normal, old links with the local community are being renewed.

Now in its 26th year, Firhouse Local Centre continues to grow and adapt in order to maintain a high standard of service, focussed closely on the needs and wishes of the adults attending, and as the staff team build on the solid foundation of past success, the aim is to continue to provide this high standard long into the future.
