Brachial Plexus Injury Clinic

The Brachial Plexus Injury Clinic is a national specialist multidisciplinary service which provides timely assessment, surgical intervention and therapy for children with brachial plexus injury. The specialist multidisciplinary team work collaboratively with family and local team to offer expert intervention, advice and guidance on how to best maximise the child’s upper limb function.

MDT Team: Consultant Pediatric Neurologist, Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon, Consultant Plastic Surgeon, Clinical Nurse Specialist, Physiotherapist, Occupational Therapist

General Referral Criteria:

  • Referrals from maternity hospitals (regional and local), PHN, Acute hospitals and GPs
  • Usually, history of birth trauma but not always
  • Timely referral post birth injury important for early intervention
  • Surgery often required before aged 6-to-9-month 
  • Older children with contractures may also need surgical opinion.
